ARTS PROGRAMS

 

Band

The Hialeah Elementary Tiger Band allows for students to play Woodwinds, Brass, or Percussion instruments that are a rarity in elementary schools. Students who play musical instruments gain a sense of self-awareness and can explore their musical abilities. The "Marching Tiger Band" performs and marches at the annual José Martí Parade, and in concert style at all school shows.

 

Cheerleaders

Hialeah Elementary School Cheerleaders strive for excellence through team spirit. Activities include Jose Martí Parade, FCAT Pep Rallies, Talent Shows, and other in school programs.

 

Chorus

The Hialeah Elementary Chorus offers the opportunity for its members to develop their singing abilities and allow them the opportunity to participate in various school and out-of-school functions.

 

Dance Team

The Hialeah Elementary Dance Team involves ethically diverse boys and girls interested in expressing their talent through dance. Students are given the opportunity to learn different styles of dancing and perform them throughout the school year in various special events and cultural programs. Dancing gives the children the chance to explore and develop their self-esteem and potential.

 

Special Arts

Our special Arts class promotes art appreciation and allows the students with artistic abilities to expand their talent in various special art projects throughout the year.

 

String Orchestra

Selected students are allowed to expand their educational and musical horizons by playing Violin, Viola, Cello, or Bass. The Strings Orchestra adds to the charm of our holiday shows. They perform and entertain at various in and out-of-school functions.

 

 

PROGRAMS

 

Academic Excellence

The Academic Excellence program is a program that provides one class in fourth and fifth grade students with enriching activities through the use of higher order critical thinking and problem solving strategies.

 

Accelerated Reader

This is a computerized reading program that allows students to select from a variety of reading selections at their reading ability. The student then takes a short comprehension quiz at the computer on the selection they have read. The program keeps track of the students reading record for the teacher to review.

 

Beautification Committee

The goal of the beautification committee is to improve the appearance of the school in order to provide the Hialeah Elementary family with a warm, nourishing and pleasant learning environment.

 

Black History

The black history committee consists of interested staff members of all ethnic backgrounds. Their purpose is to educate the students and faculty on the many contributions African Americans have made to our nation.

 

Career and Truck Day

On Career Day various members of our community visit the school. They speak to the students about their respective careers. At an early age, students are exposed to various career opportunities and the important role of education. For Truck Day, students have an opportunity to view vehicles used by many workers in our community. The students are also able to ask the drivers questions regarding their vehicles and careers.

 

Character Education

Highlights a special core value during each month. Each teacher nominates a student each month that excels in the characteristics of that value and they are recognized.

 

Closed Circuit TV "WHES"

"WHES" Channel 8 Tiger News consists of a team of fourth and fifth graders. These teams report our school's daily current events, lunch menu, perfect attendance, weather, sports, word of the week, special events and other important news.

 

Color Guards

The Color Guards introduce our Star Spangled Banner during various school activities.

 

Dr. Willow's Literacy Diet

This is not your ordinary diet, it's a reading program designed to help our Primary students grasp the fundamental reading skills and strategies to enable them to be successful readers. The balanced program provides youngsters with phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and reading comprehension skills needed to be a reading achiever.

 

Drug Abuse Resistance Education

D.A.R.E is a program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children in fifth grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.

 

Educational Excellence School Advisory Committee

The EESAC committee is composed of the principal, assistant principal, teachers, educational support employees, students, parents and citizens who are representative of the ethnic, racial, linguistic and economic community served by Hialeah Elementary. The council assists in the preparation and evaluation of the School Improvement Plan and discusses issues such as, but not limited, to the curriculum, budget, discipline and professional development.

 

Ellis Lab

This program is specifically designed to enhance our (ESOL)English Speaker of Other Language students to learn the English language through the interactive use of technology.

 

FAST Forword

Is a research based technological tutorial reading program that aids students that are learning the English language as well as struggling readers.

 

Future Educators of America

The Future Educators of America Club at Hialeah Elementary is composed of students from various ethnic, cultural, and economic background. The club strives to interest students in the field of education early n their school life. It also encourages the members to reach for academic excellence, model appropriate classroom behavior, and develop a positive self-concept.

 

Hispanic Heritage Committee

The Hispanic Heritage Committee conducts a series of special events that reflect the Hispanic culture during the month of October. Special events for the students include projects, contests and musical presentations. Community members, as well as staff members, are invited to an ethnic luncheon.

 

"I'll Catch You" Reading Program

The purpose of this program is to improve student's abilities, while improving cafeteria behavior. Students are given incentives if they are observed reading during their spare time after lunch. Coupons are compiled, and a weekly winner is randomly selected from each grade level.

 

Jeffrey Miller Computer Laboratory

Hialeah Elementary inaugurated the Jeffrey Miller Computer Laboratory on January 27th, 2006. The computer lab has 32 top of the line Dell computers, a roof mounted projector, an interactive white board, two color printers and a laser printer. The lab will be instrumental in helping students improve their literacy skills, prepare them for the FCAT, and expose them to the world of technology and its use. In addition, the Computer Laboratory is used by parents who attend the Parent Academy on a weekly basis. These parents receive instruction with the objective of enhancing their computer literacy skills.

 

Morning and After School Tutoring

In order to meet the various needs of our students, morning and after school tutoring is offered several times a week for selected students from grades K-5th. The classes are kept small, a ratio of 1:10 to maximize the learning and reinforcement of skills in reading and math.

 

Parent Academy, Parent Literacy, Computer Classes, and English for Survival

The Parent Academy and Parent Literacy Program is a partnership established between the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Weeks Gas and the Council for Educational Change.  Our Parent Academy focuses on the importance of the family in a child’s academic environment. Our focus is on effective parenting classes, parent literacy, computer instructions, and English for survival.

 

Peer Mediators

A program designed for fourth and fifth grade students to solve conflicts within the classroom which prevents fighting.

 

P-Sell

This program is sponsored through the University of Miami in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Teachers receive in-service training and manipulations to enhance the instructions of science literacy skills. Students receive intensive instructions in science literacy skills in preparation for the FCAT.

 

Pre-Kindergarten

Is offered to one class of four and five year olds providing these youngsters with school readiness skills and concepts utilizing hands-on activities and actively involved routines through the implementation of the High Scope Curriculum.

 

Recycle 4 Ever

Our school began the Recycle 4 Ever program because of our interest in the environment. Each class has a box that is designated for recycling only. A group of fifth grade students have been chosen to collect the boxes, empty the contents into recycling dumpster and return each box to its classroom. This is done on a weekly basis. We are trying to make a difference one school at a time!

 

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week celebration is designed to help our students evolve and mature into healthy and drug-free citizens. Activities during one week in October are geared to help students understand that they are responsible for making their own healthy choices in life, and choosing to be drug-free is one of the best choices they can make.

 

Safety Patrol

The safety patrol program is designed to promote safety, leadership and good citizenship among its members. Students meet on a weekly basis with their sponsor to discuss strategies that will help maintain a safe learning environment.

 

Science Club

The club is designed for fifth grade students. Its purpose is to develop the scientific skills through hands-on experiments based on P-SELL.

 

Science Fair

Beginning in Pre-Kindergarten, students are exposed to science lessons that promote the scientific method utilizing the science process skills. Students are encouraged and expected to apply their knowledge by completing science projects.

 

T.E.A.M

Teaching Enrichment Activities to Minorities are classes offered one per grade level in grades 1 through 4. These classes provide students with higher order critical thinking skill strategies, enabling students to be effective problem solvers using an array of non-traditional teaching techniques.

 

The PASS Program

The PASS Program at Hialeah Elementary is a partnership established between Weeks Gas, the Council for Educational Change and the Miami-Dade Public Schools. Mr. Jeffrey Miller, CEO of Weeks Gas and the Barbeque Superstore and Hialeah Elementary’s Principal, Ms. Carolina F. Naveiras work together on focused educational improvement and infusing business best practices into our school operations. Through the Council for Educational Change’s PASS program Mr. Miller has donated $200,000 to implement PASS and extra enhancements to our school. Weeks Gas employees also volunteer at the school and have logged more than 300 hours since the start of the partnership in July 2004.

 

Tiger Regions Bank

At a very early age students are taught about economics and the value of saving money for long-term goals. Furthermore, older students are exposed to the world of banking by serving as tellers and running many aspects of this institution under the supervision of professional tellers and a club sponsor.

 

Title I

Federally funded program that gives additional funds to schools that met the criteria of becoming a Title I school. These funds are used to purchase instructional and non-instructional personnel, educational materials, equipment & supplies to enrich the overall learning curriculum of the school.
